What is Sauvignon Blanc?
Sauvignon Blanc is the grape behind some of France’s finest whites – most notably from the Loire, in the fresh, flinty wines of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. It also stars in the classic white blends of Bordeaux.
Thanks to its global popularity, you’ll now find Sauvignon grown just about everywhere wine is made – from Chile and South Africa to, most famously, New Zealand, where it delivers bold, zesty flavours with real flair.
Wherever it’s grown, expect a crisp, pale wine with vibrant herbal aromas and tropical fruit notes. Lovely on its own – and a knockout match for seafood or white fish.
What does Sauvignon Blanc taste like?
Sauvignon Blanc is one of the most distinctive white grapes around – and that’s a big part of its charm. Its wines often overflow with grassy, herbaceous aromas (think summer meadows), and deliver flavours that lean towards gooseberry, lime or grapefruit.
Like any great grape, Sauvignon’s style shifts with its surroundings. In the Loire Valley, it’s refined and elegant – classic Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. Head to New Zealand’s Marlborough, and it becomes bold, vibrant and dramatically expressive.
What does Loire Sauvignon taste like?
Loire Sauvignon is restrained and elegant, with pronounced herby or grassy aromas. Expect crisp gooseberry and citrus fruit flavours, with minerally or flinty notes on the finish.
What does New Zealand Sauvignon taste like?
New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc – especially from Marlborough – is instantly recognisable. It leaps from the glass with vibrant herbal notes and tropical aromas. On the palate, expect juicy bursts of grapefruit and peach, followed by a zesty, citrus-fresh finish that leaves your tastebuds tingling.
Sauvignon Blanc wines from other southern Hemisphere countries like Chile and South Africa lie somewhere in between.
Is Sauvignon Blanc dry or sweet?
Sauvignon Blanc is nearly always a very dry, zesty and aromatic style of white.
How to choose a Sauvignon Blanc
You can find great examples of Sauvignon Blanc from all around the world. Chile is tops for value, and South Africa makes some beautifully elegant and refreshing styles. If you’re looking for the best of the best, opt for a Sauvignon Blanc from one of the top regions, such as the Loire Valley in France or Marlborough, New Zealand.
All of our Sauvignon Blanc wines come with detailed descriptions, plus reviews from your fellow wine fans, to help you find the right one for you.
Food pairing with Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon Blanc’s distinctive aromas and pronounced flavours make it a delicious white for sipping without food – ideally on the patio enjoying some sunshine.
But it’s also a great food partner. It has a lot going on in flavours terms on its own, so works well with simple dishes like foil-baked white fish or seafood pasta, allowing the wine to really shine. Or you can go the other way and pair it with full-flavoured dishes like pasta with homemade pesto – its crisp lemony citrus character will cut through the intense flavours of the food.
