The Wine
Originally named after the Kalimna vineyard in the Barossa that Penfolds bought in 1945, Bin 28 Shiraz now draws its grapes from across the warmest regions of South Australia. It’s aim: to showcase a ripe, voluptuous, full-blooded style of Australian Shiraz. It’s first release was in 1959, now 70 years later, winemaker Peter Gago draws the grapes from across the state, although the Barossa is always well represented. The 2019 comprises Shiraz from McLaren Vale, Barossa, Wrattonbully and Padthaway, all of which experienced low yields and grapes of immense concentration. Aged for a year in seasoned American oak hogshead (larger than the norm, they lend less oak flavour), this Shiraz is appealing now, but will age for years. Decant early.
