Les Hauts de Font Rocher Lirac 2016
Lirac AOP

Love the big reds of Châteauneuf? Then try Lirac. This appellation just across the river, with similar big pebble soils, also produces sumptuous, rich, velvety reds. Especially in the amazing 2016 vintage – “unmissable, one of the greats” (Decanter).

The Wine
Here’s a fantastic find from ancient Roquemaure, in the southern Rhône, close to Châteauneuf. It lies within Lirac, an appellation recognised in 1947 and today with an excellent reputation for its reds. Like this velvety 2016, Lirac’s red wines tend to have a higher proportion of Syrah and Mourvèdre, with a pleasing firmness to match. Our Buyer loved the quality of this wine – as good as a Châteauneuf, but with a more modest price tag. In addition, it’s from 2016 – a vintage regarded as even better than its amazing predecessor. Crafted from hand picked old vine fruit, planted on ancient alluvial terraces, this Rhône red is lithe and spicy. Enjoy lively red and black fruit and well integrated tannins and complexity. A great match for lamb.
