El Bombero Winemaker's Release 2018

For 50 years we’ve been travelling off the beaten track to bring you the tastiest, best value wines. And nearly 30 years ago that quest took us to Cariñena and winemaker Javier Domeque. Here, the red, stony soils look more like the surface of Mars than how most people picture a vineyard. However, Cariñena is home to a treasure trove of gnarled old vines, producing miserly yields of deeply concentrated fruit. That fruit created the legendary BIG red El Bombero. The original ‘firefighter’ is pure Garnacha, but to craft the Winemaker's Release Javier blended old vine Garnacha with finest Tempranillo and a splash of cassis laden Cabernet. Six months in barrel adds complexity to this rich red that’s great with spicy chorizo or papas con huevos.
