Château de Colombe Castillon Cotes de Bordeaux 2016
Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux AOC

Across the slope from Saint Emilion’s Grands Crus Châteaux Faugères and de Pressac lies little Château de Colombe. It sits on the same limestone ridge but in less fashionable Castillon. Hence this top vintage claret is both delicious and well priced.

The Wine
Tucked away in Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux, next to Saint Emilion, is award winning Château de Colombe, a tiny estate much neglected until we took ownership in 2008. Now it’s being lavished with the utmost care in the vineyard and the cellar. Our Head Winemaker, Haut-Brion trained Jean-Marc Sauboua, quickly spotted the potential of its steep, south-facing slopes and limestone soils. Judging by the six Golds won by the 2015, he was absolutely right. 2016 is arguably even better, perhaps not so upfront, but nonetheless luscious and well structured. A meticulous selection of Merlot with a little of both Cabernets, aged a year in barrel, this red is deliciously supple and approachable. Open early and decant, then serve with rare beef.
