The Wine
This mature claret from a little-known Pauillac estate is drinking beautifully now. Château Bellegrave lies in this highly regarded Haut-Médoc commune, rubbing shoulders with big names like Château Latour and Château Pichon-Longueville. A modest estate of 8.3 hectares, it makes clarets of outstanding quality that can cellar for years. Just as this vintage has. Today, it's the property of Gabriel Meffre, run now by his grandsons Ludovic and Julien. As the estate’s name suggests, the soil consists of gravel that provides the perfect growing conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, the lead grape in this wine. A portion of Merlot lends soft, plummy notes, while a year in oak (nearly half new) has added rich complexity. Drinking beautifully now.
