Pomerol AOC

Glowing tributes and a host of scores from 92-94 points show how well this Pomerol did in 2019. After tasting the wine, critic Neal Martin said this Bourgneuf has "a natural swagger." Brooding with dark cherry and spices, it's a classy, silky red.

The Wine
Pomerol is the smallest region of Bordeaux's Right Bank, very little compared to expansive St Emilion just to the east. You would think nothing of importance happened in its rather flat vineyards, yet its wines are some of the most expensive in the world. There Merlot reaches creamy perfection on both the heavy clay and the sandy gravel of the plateau. Château Bourgneuf has been in the Vayron family for 200 years. It is very well situated, just to the west of Château Trotanoy and just southwest of L'Eglise Clinet. Its small vineyard holdings are on Pomerol's plateau and produce a seductive red in the hands of winemaker Frédérique Vayron. Ageing in a third new oak for just over a year lends an elegant touch to this very fine claret.
