The Wine
Albert Bichot is a family-owned Burgundy négociant dating from 1831. With around 100 hectares of vines up and down the region, they are one of the bigger players in Burgundy. And in this case, bigger can be beautiful. They have a number of individual estates throughout the region, managed independently, but benefiting from the clout of investment and know how. In charge is Albéric Bichot, a former ‘Winemaker of the Year’ at the International Wine Challenge. Clos des Ursulines is a superb monopole vineyard (ie with just one owner) lying adjacent to Volnay vineyards, first owned by the nuns of Ursuline. Handpicked grapes, gently vinified and aged a year in one-third new oak, it's a delicately nuanced, expressive red. Open early or cellar.
