Magical New Zealand Sauvignon – there are few more aromatic, intensely fruity or more enjoyable styles on the planet. And these selections are the best of the best. Where else to start than Cloudy Bay, the most famous Kiwi Sauvignon of all. The latest release is awash with ripe honeydew melon and passion fruit flavours. There are two huge favourites in Rapaura Springs Rohe Blind River and aromatic Dog Point from a former Cloudy Bay duo. Finally, there’s Hunter’s Home Block from our old friend Jane Hunter – whose cellar put New Zealand Sauvignon on the fine wine map when it won wine of show at our London festival back in 1986.

Cloudy Bay is the most renowned wine name in New Zealand … and for good reason. Their Sauvignon Blanc has terrific purity of fruit, intensity and poise, it’s become the “standard bearer of Marlborough wineries” (Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide).

Ever since David Hohnen, the visionary behind the esteemed Cape Mentelle in Western Australia, introduced his showstopping Cloudy Bay Sauvignon in the 1980s, it has left wine lovers spellbound. Impressively fresh and intense, this wine has an understated brilliance that distinguishes it from more exuberant Sauvignons. Nestled in Marlborough’s Wairau Valley at the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, the estate takes its name from the most easterly point of the valley, named Cloudy Bay by explorer Captain James Cook when he discovered the region in 1770. There’s plenty of competition now for Marlborough’s top spot, but Cloudy Bay continues to be the benchmark of quality for New Zealand wines. Savour with seafood or spicy Thai dishes.

Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc

It was an exciting day for wine lovers when Cloudy Bay’s former viticulturalist and winemaker, Ivan Sutherland and James Healy, decided to go out on their own. Here's their brilliantly aromatic Sauvignon, with bright gooseberry, mineral-zipped fruit.

Meet Dog Point – an outstanding, award-winning range of wines from New Zealand’s Marlborough region. In 2004 Ivan Sutherland and James Sealy decided to take the skills they’d learnt as viticulturalist and winemaker at Cloudy Bay and set up on their own. They had a head start as Ivan had planted vineyards in Marlborough back in the 1970s. Dog Point remains very much owned by the two families – a boutique winery aiming firmly for high-quality wines, produced as naturally as possible. Using hand-picked, low-yield grapes, the wine is meticulously made and hugely expressive of both Sauvignon Blanc and the terroir of the Wairau Valley. No stranger to awards, this is a white to chill down and savour with salmon with salsa perhaps or spicy noodles.

Hunter's was the estate that kick-started the Kiwi wine revolution in the 1980s. Here's their terrific Sauvignon using grapes all from their original Home Block vineyard. The last two vintages got scores of 94, 95 and 5 Stars. 2023 is truly zesty.

Ernie and Jane Hunter were the first to put New Zealand on the world wine map. That was with Sauvignon Blanc from the little vineyard beside their winery – the Home Block. When shown outside New Zealand at our 1986 London Vintage Festival, their 1985 simply astonished customers and experts alike. It won every award going, sparked New Zealand newspaper headlines and a debate in the NZ parliament! The country suddenly realised it had an extraordinary wine to offer the world. Hunter's today remains family owned, but has extended well beyond the Home Block. This special release is all Sauvignon from the original vineyard. With four months' ageing on lees, but no bâtonnage (stirring), the wine sings with fruit finesse. A great seafood white.

If you like the Reserve Sauvignon from Rapaura – New Zealand's former Winery of the Year and World’s Best Sauvignon Trophy winner - you'll love Rohe Dillons Point. From an exceptional subregion, it dazzles with ripe tropical fruit and minerality.

Rapaura Springs has an astonishing track record of Trophies, Golds and top-scoring wines. The winery's owned by the Neylon family, who started their farming career with mussels and apples but found vines much more rewarding! They now have vineyards throughout Marlborough's best sites, and also work with a handful of skilled and loyal growers to gain access to the finest fruit. The result is sensational wines like this. It's crafted from grapes taken from Dillons Point, one of Marlborough's finest subregions, near the coast and at the confluence of two rivers. Its special climate and sandy soils provide ideal conditions. With exuberant tropical fruit and intense minerality, this great white is a treat to sip on its own or with fine seafood.
