Bill Calabria has won hundreds of awards for the wines he crafts with his team at the family’s Riverina cellar. Made from Chardonnay matured in premium oak, his top white balances opulent tropical fruit with buttery notes and supreme freshness.

Every wine from Westend Estate is a winner – a superb balance of intense fruit, character and freshness – and, as James Halliday notes, owner Bill Calabria is “understandably proud of his achievements”. It’s no surprise his No.1 Chardonnay has long been a hit with our customers. Bill was a champion boxer in his youth but in his 20s it became apparent his real talent lay in winemaking, triumphantly proved when he was awarded the Order of Australia for his contribution to the industry. Bill and his team, headed now by Emma Norbiato, craft affordable, high-quality wines by sourcing the best quality grapes from the region and fermenting them in small parcels. Rounded and elegant, his No.1 Chardonnay is delicious with sauced fish and chicken.

Four times ‘Chilean Winery of the Year’, Luis Felipe Edwards is one of the country’s leading producers, very much family based too. Their Chardonnay has a brilliant balance between ripe fruit and freshness – no wonder it remains a customer favourite.

Founded in 1976 by Luis Felipe Edwards Snr, descendant of a London-born doctor, Viña Luis Felipe Edwards is synonymous worldwide with quality and innovation. That's why it's a four-time winner of the ‘Best Chilean Wine Producer’. Chief winemaker Nicolas Bizzarri has the highest quality standards, having worked with fine estates all over the world, and has picked up top Trophies for LFE along the way. For this refreshing white made from his favourite white grape, Chardonnay, Nicolas selects fruit with an ideal balance of ripeness and freshness, all from estate vineyards. It's delicious and always ready to delight. Brimful of bright citrus, melon and peach flavours, it's a superb partner to sauced fish or white meat dishes. Or simply solo.

Finally winemaker Sam Trimboli has taken the plunge and gone out on his own. It seems to be working wonders, judging by the fruity moreishness of this ripe, tasty white. Chardonnay with a splash of Pinot Grigio, it's gorgeously bright and creamy.

Many of you will remember Sam Trimboli from his days at Warburn Estate where, every vintage, he’d pick up literally hundreds of awards. He’s still on a winning streak, but now he’s renting space all for himself at a winery in Riverina, New South Wales. Sam makes there the mighty Black Duck, and his white version – the equally fruity and irresistible White Duck. Sam has been in the region for many years, so knows exactly where the best grapes are growing. In 2023, he selected when he wanted them picked too, cool fermenting and adding a touch of citrusy Pinot Grigio to the blend. This is the sort of wine you should never be short of, ready chilled in the fridge. Exuberant with bright melon fruit – serve solo or with a spicy noodle dish.

Domaine Saint André is a Chardonnay full of bright, fresh flavour. Thanks to night harvesting, it has tropical fruit ripeness and appetising freshness, ensuring its appeal to lovers of both affordable white Burgundy and New World Chardonnay.

If you enjoy quality wine and appreciate value, southern France has a lot to offer. There is a myriad of appellations and producers to get to know. And fewer rules to follow, so winemakers can be creative. We have been wending our way around villages and vineyards there since the late 1960s so we know where to look and have many invaluable connections. Yannick Pons of Domaine Saint André has a beautiful estate, skirted by the Canal du Midi and the Roman road Via Domitia. It's not far from the famous Oppidum (hilltop town) d’Ensérune, which dates back some 3,000 years. This is prime Chardonnay country, producing lovely, pure, creamy peach fruit in this modern style white. It’s perfect on its own or with salads, fish dishes or roast chicken.

Domaine Saint André Chardonnay

Superb. Absolutely gorgeous white wine, great value for the money, a definite must buy again

The quality of wines coming from South Africa has never been better. The FT described them as "gorgeous, often underpriced". This Reserve Chardonnay was slow fermented using wild yeast, bringing expressive flavours of peach and bright citrus.

The Press Association wrote, "South African winemakers are producing an abundance of world-class wines". Excelsior Estate has been doing that for 150 years, since its foundation in Robertson in 1870. Today it’s still owned by the De Wet family, with father and son duo – Freddie and Peter – running the show. Their philosophy is that great wine is made in the vineyard, so much care is given to the vines. Their Heritage Reserve range uses their finest grapes from the lowest-yielding vines on the region’s premium limestone soils, all to ensure rich flavour. Only 'wild' yeast from the grape skins is used, which produces a wine with broader flavours. Enjoy this creamy, unoaked Chardonnay, with its citrus peach notes, with white meats or salmon.

Excelsior Heritage Reserve Wild Ferment Chardonnay

Australia and Chardonnay go hand in hand in the warm sunshine to produce luscious full-on fruit flavours. Gold Top is a luxurious white - rich, buttery, with ample creamy peach and apricot notes and a bright zesty lift. A timeless classic!

Limestone Coast is a prized area in the south-eastern corner of South Australia. It's blessed by the ocean breezes, which cool the vineyards, slow the ripening, and produce grapes with freshness, aroma and concentration. A wide range of grape varieties, both red and white, excel in the area – including Shiraz, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Gold Top is a wonderful example of Chardonnay from this premium region. Creamy, buttery, full-flavoured and rich – only one name would do! Like a traditional full-on ‘Gold Top’ milk, this is golden Australian Chardonnay at its most indulgent. Lashings of peaches and cream on every sip, all perfectly balanced by a sunny citrus zip that’s oh-so moreish. Sip solo or alongside creamy mushroom pappardelle.
