Wines so dark they seem to block out the light, delivering oodles of silk-smooth richness with every sip. Gorgeous. So tempted to never drink another red again, it really is that good!

A smooth, richly spiced, black red – our most reordered ever and with a history of umpteen Golds. From deep in southern France, Cabalié needs no ceremony. Just large glasses for serving! A Grenache-charged, old-vine gem, brimful of spicy berry fruit.

Take a minute to read the (literally thousands of) 5-star online reviews for Cabalié. This one is typical: “When my time comes to shuffle off this mortal coil, this is the wine I want in that final glass. It is simply, utterly, indescribably fantastic.” Its secret? It’s crafted by a master winemaker, Hervé Sabardeil, following the centuries-old style beloved of Roman centurions, who first made wine there. Raspberry-rich Grenache, with herby Syrah and Carignan, Cabalié has impressive concentration. That’s due to the maturity of the vines, most well over 50 years old. The tiny berries they produce give Cabalié extraordinarily rich, ripe flavours. Boasting 8 Golds in as many vintages, this much-loved red is warming solo or with hearty dishes.

A taste of Nero di Troia, one of Puglia’s finest grapes. More often found in pricey blends, it appears here in glorious solo. Made by top Italian winemaker Andrea Bernardini, it's a velvety red full of blackberry, violet and smoky vanilla spice.

Top winemaker Andrea Bernardini has discovered just how to get the most from the superb Nero di Troia grape. The result is the deliciously dark, velvety Corsiero. No need to blend Nero di Troia with softer varieties – gently pressed and carefully vinified, it makes a seductive, deeply flavoured, fruit-rich red. Nero di Troia is named after the town of Troia in northern Puglia, said to have been founded by Greek hero Diomedes, famous for helping to defeat the city of Troy in Asia Minor (yes, the grape really is that old!). Just outside Troia, the story goes, Diomedes planted vine cuttings named Nero after the dark colour of the grape skins and the deep-hued wine. Rich, warming Corsiero is perfect with rich pasta dishes, game or hearty stew.

Exceptional, rich, smooth red. One of the best value-for-money reds

Six medals last vintage (including three Golds and a double Gold) and this 2022 is also brimming with big, spicy red fruit flavours. Ancient bush vines high in Jumilla produce intense fruit, complemented in this velvety red by sweet spicy oak.

This is a BIG fruity red that customers adore. It hails from a little-known region of Spain. Cast down its eastern coast and you’ll stumble across the desert-like landscape of Jumilla. It’s where Spaghetti Westerns used to be filmed and is home to some of the oldest and most concentrated Syrah and Monastrell vines in Spain. Camino de Seda, meaning ‘Silk Road’, comes from a winery just off this historic route that brought wealth and splendour to the region over 500 years ago. It’s crafted by Scottish-born winemaker Pamela Geddes. Her passion for wine took her to Australia where she learnt how to capture freshness and fruitiness in the hottest of climates, so she's right at home in Jumilla. A warming, spicy red to enjoy with hearty dishes.

As Black Stump fans will attest, we led the Aussie Durif charge in the UK and we’re always on the lookout for exciting new releases. Enter Dark Corner, an alluring, weighty Durif Shiraz from one of Australia’s most successful, family-owned wineries.

As you’d expect from a wine dominated by Durif, this is a whopper of a red. It was carefully crafted in the darkest corner of the cellar. Why? Because it’s the special project of rising star winemaker David Joeky and he didn’t want anyone to take a look or taste it until he was absolutely ready. So every evening, after the rest of the crew had left, David would retire to the furthest corner of the cellar, where he’d stationed his special tanks of dark, spicy Durif and ripest, peppery Shiraz. We think he’s ‘blended a blinder’ as the locals say. It’s firm and full, yet abundant in gloriously ripe, liquorice- and spice-scented fruit with an underlying note of oak. Smooth enough to sip on its own, but even better with hearty red meat dishes.

This wine is delicious, jammy, rich and full of fruit. Very easy to drink. Portugal at its best

Gorgeously rich, weighty Shiraz, not from Oz, but from a top winemaker in Portugal. Jaime Quendera makes wines loved by customers and critics alike, many of them winning awards. Sandy soils and abundant sunshine make for a big, spicy, powerful red.

The Independent named Rocksand Shiraz among its ‘12 Best Portuguese Wines’, giving it the title of ‘best for a meat feast’! The secret to its luscious weight and fruit-packed splendour is the sandy soils, which hold little rain for the vines, plus the unrelenting hot sun of the Setúbal Península. The result is a very modest yield of small berries crammed with juicy flavour and spice. No wonder, then, award-winning winemaker Jaime Quendera is now forging a worldwide reputation for Setúbal’s rich, bold reds, all at affordable prices, too. A few months' ageing in French oak barrels has lent a gorgeous, spicy, vanilla lift to its wealth of ripe black fruits. A fine treat to serve with spicy chorizo sausages, a hearty stew or the Sunday roast.

At the legendary McPherson Winery, the aim with The Full Fifteen has always been to create a mighty Big Red, that’s velvety smooth and immensely drinkable from day one. So rich and fruit packed, in fact, it’s like two bottles crammed into one.

The Full Fifteen is a powerful customer favourite boasting pages of 5-star online reviews. Andrew McPherson, or ‘Bic Mac’ to friends, launched this mighty Aussie red in 2003. It was an instant hit with customers and we really didn’t think it could get any better. Then, in 2012, Andrew appointed Jo Nash as chief winemaker and quality went up another step. Mother of four and married to another winemaker, she's a very busy lady, but fits it all in with a big smile and has many top awards to her name. She took the much-loved Full Fifteen and added yet more layers of gorgeous flavour, all with an elegant touch. Punnets of black summer berries mingle with a seductive, smoky spice. A Big Red to pair with a rib-eye steak or a hearty casserole.
