Every vintage, winemaker Alan Kennett pulls out all the stops to create another sublime ‘Stump’. He combines Australia's two powerhouse grapes – Shiraz and Durif – to make a super-charged black red, packed with ripe velvety fruit layered with spice.

According to winemaker Alan Kennett (and thousands of Black Stump customers), when you combine Durif and Shiraz “magical things happen”. Perhaps that explains Black Stump’s splendid two decades of popularity. The wine owes its name to a mythical outback marker of the boundary between the known world and the unknown. Describe anything as the best “this side of the black stump” and you mean it’s reckoned to be unbeatable. How appropriate for an affordable Aussie red of peerless intensity and popularity. Dark Durif, “the grape that takes no prisoners” (The Observer), and impressively juicy Shiraz make a perfect marriage, creating a velvety, voluptuous, and irresistible style. Serve in large glasses with steak and kidney pie or a Sunday roast.

As Black Stump fans will attest, we led the Aussie Durif charge in the UK and we’re always on the lookout for exciting new releases. Enter Dark Corner, an alluring, weighty Durif Shiraz from one of Australia’s most successful, family-owned wineries.

As you’d expect from a wine dominated by Durif, this is a whopper of a red. It was carefully crafted in the darkest corner of the cellar. Why? Because it’s the special project of rising star winemaker David Joeky and he didn’t want anyone to take a look or taste it until he was absolutely ready. So every evening, after the rest of the crew had left, David would retire to the furthest corner of the cellar, where he’d stationed his special tanks of dark, spicy Durif and ripest, peppery Shiraz. We think he’s ‘blended a blinder’ as the locals say. It’s firm and full, yet abundant in gloriously ripe, liquorice- and spice-scented fruit with an underlying note of oak. Smooth enough to sip on its own, but even better with hearty red meat dishes.

From Trophy-winning Johnny Q here's a rich Aussie red that doesn't just shake your hand and say “g’day”, it wraps you in a big bear hug too! Two Golds (another last vintage) shows it's not just customers who love the velvety fruit and smooth finish.

Get ready for full-bodied, rich fruit flavour with this award-winning Petite Sirah. It's made by Australia’s hottest winemaker, John Quarisa (or Johnny Q as he’s known). For 20 years John worked long hours at some of Australia’s best wineries, including McWilliam’s, Casella and Nugan Estate. He always dreamed of setting up on his own but kept putting it off. That was until wife Josephine ‘spat the dummy’ (as they say in Oz) and told him to get a move on! Now he works even longer hours, but making his OWN wine, at his OWN winery. Declared “exceptional value for money” by Australia’s top wine critic, James Halliday, these wines are full of flavour and character. Enjoy his Gold medal Petite Sirah (aka Durif) with a hearty casserole or steak.

RedHeads don't tow the line, they're Aussie rebels leading the field! From the get-go, they've made small-volume, handcrafted wines from 'rescued' grapes. This is a cracker – Barossa, Clare, McLaren and Langhorne Creek. A palate-punching Shiraz.

20 years ago, a lightbulb moment resulted in the creation of RedHeads by Tony and Tom Laithwaite. It was a no-gimmicks, no-rules cellar where young, talented (and rebellious) winemakers could moonlight and make small-batch wines that really rocked their boat. Growers started bringing in pick-up loads of their best grapes they wanted 'rescuing' from the mega-blends. RedHeads winemakers began to gain a reputation as the ‘Robinhood of grapes’ – saving parcels to make into handcrafted wines. So popular, the cellar outgrew its original home and, for a few years, it moved from shed to shed. Finally it bought its own vineyard and built a state-of-the-art, off-grid, solar-powered eco winery. RedHeads by name, green by nature, with awards galore.

RedHeads Good Shiraz

Second release of Son of Red from Sam Trimboli, a favourite Aussie winemaker. It's inspired by a famous bushranger who went down in a blaze of glory and stepped into folklore. Mostly Shiraz, it’s bursting with juicy bramble fruits and smoky spice.

Australian outlaw, Ned Kelly, is the inspiration behind this striking label. His story inspired another underdog – Sam Trimboli. One of our most popular Aussie winemakers, behind many of our chart-topping wines, Sam wasn't born into a famous winemaking clan or wine region. He just proved his skill through hard grunt and great wines. Shiraz takes the lead in this fruit-filled red, while a twist of Durif and Saperavi (a native grape to Georgia) adds deep purple hues and soft full tannins. Combined they show off ripe aromas of blackberry, raspberry and cherry, with a hint of gun smoke from a light touch of French and American oak. Seductively smooth as a glass on its own, or a great match with juicy burgers and grilled vegetable kebabs.
