In 2003 Barbara Laithwaite and Cherry Thompson planted 4,000 vines on a hectare of the Chiltern Hills. The first release, 10 years later, was immediately voted ‘Top English Sparkling’, triumphing at the same time over well-known Champagnes. Other Trophies, Golds and Double Golds have followed – all from this south facing, now two hectare vineyard on the stony gravel soil of the Thames terraces. Only the classic trio of Champagne grapes – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier – are grown, and all three were used to make this delicious, first release rosé. It’s crafted in a rich, rounded style with brisk minerality, reflecting the cool microclimate of this 100 metre altitude site. Who needs Champagne when you’ve English fizz this good?
