Fans of Antipodean Sauvignon take note. Even further south than Margaret River in Western Australia, close to the Southern Ocean, sits the tiny, high quality Rockcliffe winery. It lies in Great Southern, described by Wine Enthusiast as a region “long overshadowed by more renowned Margaret River. But risk-taking vintners are giving wine lovers a new reason to look at this corner of Australia.” Sea breezes cool the vines and help to produce some of Australia’s raciest whites. While Sauvignon is often blended with Semillon, just as it is in Bordeaux, here it’s exhilarating on its own. With an elegant gooseberry and guava bouquet, this is a true cool climate Sauvignon with intriguing herbal complexity. Ideal with freshly shucked oysters.
