Gloriously mature, nine year old Rioja Reserva. It comes courtesy of two brothers who are working wonders at their family estate. They'd purchased the bodega, the oldest in Rioja, and discovered this wine. A cancelled order meant we've snapped it up.

Bodegas Berceo is Haro’s oldest winery. Established in 1801, it’s an aristocratic estate, the wines of which are first class, but whose business sense was lacking! The brothers, David and Victor, stepped in to save it, seeing it as an opportunity both to expand their award-winning range and increase their cellar space. For below this winery is a remarkable network of caves (once part of an escape route from Haro’s medieval castle). Not only that, they are full of cases of mature, top vintage Riojas. That's where this superb 2011 has been maturing for the last nine years. It was bound for China, but of course, come lockdown, the order was cancelled and we are all the beneficiaries. This is unmissable for Rioja fans. Perfect with lamb.
