As canny wine buyers know, the word Villages on a Côtes du Rhône label indicates a step up in quality and wines of richer fruit and depth. That is certainly the case of this top vintage Cairanne red – lush and velvety with long blackberry ripeness.

Winemaker Pierre Vieillescazes joined the team at this family cellar in 2015 and has made his mark with two consecutive unmissable vintages. He works closely with selected growers and chose Grenache and Syrah grapes from premium hillside plots in the north of Cairanne. Wines have been made in this southern Rhône village for centuries. In Pierre’s favoured vineyards the soil is similar to that in Châteauneuf, with boulder-like stones that trap heat during the day and release it to the vines at night, helping to ripen grapes to perfection. Grenache brings plump red fruit and white pepper character, while Syrah lends smoky blackberry notes and a spicy edge. Decant to show this wine off at its best and serve with rack of lamb or a hearty stew.
