Garnacha, Carignan, Syrah and Merlot, tended in the inhospitable terroir of Spain’s Priorat. Crafted by a small group of six families in a tiny cellar and aged in part new oak, it’s rich and complex, with a tight granite grip and intense black fruit.

Priorat is a jewel among the wine regions of Spain, with a reputation to match. In 2002, six vine growing families there pooled resources to make wines purely from their own fruit. All of them have day jobs and make wine as a hobby – a serious one. Together they have 15 hectares of vines, some of which date back to 1910, with the youngest planted in the 1980s. And they have created a cellar in the basement of a house dating back to 1235. Typically for Priorat, the vines cling to precipitously steep schistous slopes, which accounts for the minute yields and the minerally grip in the wine. Using half Garnacha from 90 year old vines, all aged a year in barrel (20% new), Genium Celler is a wine of richness, intensity and depth. Let it breathe.

"Classic, high-altitude Priorat, it’s intense but elegant, with refreshing acidity. Decant first" Beth Willard
