If you’re not familiar yet, get to grips with the Riesling grape with this brilliant, dry and rounded white from the Pfalz. Some of the world’s finest Rieslings come from Germany, and specifically the Pfalz region, where the wines are famously richer and riper thanks to a warmer climate. Indeed Pfalz wines are truly regal, the 2016s proving the point with “intensely fragrant, well-balanced young wines: fruit-driven, elegant, fresh” (Wines of Germany). Here at 13th generation estate Weingut Gabel, deep limestone soils impart a unique mineral character and a delicacy perfectly harmonised by ageing in 100-year-old casks. As a single vineyard wine, from high perched vineyards, Goldberg is the pick of the crop. Delicious with baked sea bass.
