If you love the rich, powerful style of Italy’s Amarone, but not the usual price, we urge you to try Fortazzo. It’s a dense, velvety red from Sicily, made like Amarone from dried grapes, and packed with smouldering black fruit and creamy richness.
Tasting notes
Full bodied, with deep black plum and cherry notes. Velvety, oaky
Aroma
Opulent nose of candied figs and ripe black fruit
We’ve noted how you all love Amarone at our tastings, but we wanted to find one that was more affordably priced. So our Buyer worked closely with an innovative winery in Sicily – one that’s thoroughly modern, yet mindful of the island’s great traditions. The result was this powerful red. The winemaking team took a blend of Nero d’Avola, Merlot and Syrah grapes, perfectly ripened on Sicily’s sun baked, volcanic slopes, and partially dried them (hence the name Appassite), just like they do for Amarone. This really concentrates the flavours in the juice. A long, slow fermentation, followed by ageing in barrel, produced this dark and seductive red. It will go down a storm with richer meat dishes, from roast pork belly to a warming casserole.
