Carmenère is Chile’s signature red grape, rarely appearing anywhere else solo. Yet its wines classically offer ample, silky ripe fruit. Carmenère originated in Bordeaux, then was shipped to Chile, where it was mistakenly labelled as Merlot and its true identity only discovered in the 1990s. The grape is well suited to Chile and makes some of the country’s most distinctive wines. The man behind this classic Carmenère is Nicolas Bizzarri, head winemaker at the Luis Felipe Edwards estate, a previous winner of the Trophy for ‘Best Carmenère’ at the Wines of Chile awards, and part of the team that won ‘Chilean Winery of the Year’ four times. Don Cayetano Carmenère brims with bramble and spice flavours. Ideal with lamb chops or bangers and mash.
