There's little to beat the warming, supple black fruit and authentic herbal spice of a good Côtes du Rhône. With two Golds, Domaine de Picarèles sets the bar even higher. Syrah and Grenache from a 5-star vintage, it oozes lush blackberry and spice.

Picarèles is a small 12-hectare estate, just a half hour's drive from Châteauneuf du Pape. Its vineyard shares the same galet strewn soils – big stones that absorb the sun's heat during the day and emit it at night to help ripen the grapes. The domaine is part of Les Vignerons de Gaujac, a tiny co-op with just seven members run by Jean Paul Coste, a winemaker with many Golds to his name (including two for this wine). His great grandfather founded the cellar in 1928, so he's passionate about keeping the winery's spirit alive by making fabulous single estate wines like this. 2019 was a superb vintage, so there's lovely depth of rich, ripe black fruit tempered by liquorice and wild herb notes. Roast game or a herby casserole make a fine match.
