Gold-medal Merlot Cabernet – supposedly a mere country red, but judging by its award and maturity, it's much grander. From the renowned Pic Saint Loup cru of southern France and a top cellar, this is an elegant, ripe red with Bordeaux pretensions!

The Coteaux du Pic winery lies in southern France's exciting cru Pic Saint Loup area. There you'll find famous names such as Domaine L'Hortus and Château de Lancyre, the wines of which don't come cheap. This mellow Merlot Cabernet comes under the IGP Saint Guilhem de Désert, an appellation that covers wines that don't conform to the AOP rules! Here, that means non-native grapes and we think it's all the tastier for that. The area lies at the foot of the Cévennes mountains, close to the Med, with both exceptional soils and climate which help to make long lived reds. This 2017 is already showing well – velvety smooth with ripe cassis and red berry fruit, now showing some complexity. A dead cert with roast beef or lamb, or a tasty hot pot.

"Fruity, elegant and fresh, with redcurrant and plum notes. New IGP of this classy cru" Mark Hoddy
