The most famous name in New Zealand wine, Cloudy Bay produces the quintessential Marlborough style of Sauvignon. Yet Te KoKo is their ‘alternative style’ that better reflects a smoky Sancerre or creamy Burgundy. It’s a premium wine that’s only made when conditions are just right. 2019 was one of those years. Low rainfall and plenty of sun led to tiny yields of beautifully concentrated grapes. Te Koko gained its complexity via slow fermentation using wild yeast in French oak barrels. A resting period of 11 months on its fine lees deepened this savoury complexity and developed a gorgeous texture. Exotic, floral and smoky flavours combine with ample ripe tropical fruit. As a supremely elegant wine, pair it with something equally special.
