New Zealand’s Cloudy Bay is the “standard-bearer of Marlborough wineries” (Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide) and these days famous for far more than just Sauvignon Blanc. Their first class Chardonnay is a New World rival to fine white Burgundy.

Since David Hohnen launched his iconic Cloudy Bay Sauvignon internationally in the 1980s, wine drinkers have been falling over themselves in the rush to get a share. Cloudy Bay remains the region’s reference for quality and is just as famous today for its Chardonnay and magnificent sparkling wine. This world class 2017 Chardonnay rivals the great whites of the Côte d’Or. Grapes were selected from the best sites around Marlborough and the juice fermented in oak barrels, not stainless steel vats. Why? To get a seamless and more subtle oak quality in the wine. Top producers in Burgundy have done it this way for years. It’s fresh, rich and full of peach and nectarine flavours with biscuity complexity. Gorgeous on its own and with roast chicken.
