Château Bonalgue (magnum) 2010

Pomerol AOC

Parker says of Bonalgue: “This over-achieving estate is one of the most consistent performers in Pomerol. Always a well made, fleshy, succulent, hedonistic wine.” It’s been aged to perfection in magnums, the ideal bottle size to mature great claret.

Hugh Johnson writes “The consensus is that Pomerols are the gentlest, richest and the more instantly appealing clarets.” Perhaps that’s why Pomerol’s top wines are pricier than the First Growths of the Médoc. While Château Bonalgue may not be in the same league as Pétrus or Le Pin, their generous velvety wines bear the hallmarks of classic Pomerol. It’s made even more appealing by the outstanding 2010 vintage, described by Parker as “another year of compelling Bordeaux that will go down as a prodigious vintage alongside 2009”. The wine owes its lush, fleshy character to a Merlot dominated blend. A year in oak adds further roundness and complexity, and after a decade’s maturation it’s ready to enjoy with pheasant, ox cheek or beef casserole.
