Maison Roche de Bellene Chassagne-Montrachet 2017

Chassagne-Montrachet AOC

The 2017 vintage has been highly praised: "a modern classic," wrote Vinous, "very good indeed," Tim Atkin MW. From the formidable winemaker and négociant Nicolas Potel, this beautifully poised and intense Chassagne is already creamy, ripe and fresh.

Roche de Bellene is the craftsmanship of Nicolas Potel. He learned from his father Gérard, renowned for putting Burgundy's Domaine Pousse d'Or at the same level as Romanée Conti. Despite this high bar, Nicolas Potel has shown equal, if not greater, talent. He studied in Beaune, then gained experience in Australia and California. His father's early death meant the family estate had to be sold and Nicolas had to build up from nothing. He makes organic, old vine wines from his domaine, as well as sourcing top quality parcels of wine and finishing them. Both receive exceedingly high praise, "both domaine and négociant wines can be absolutely delicious." From a 5-Star vintage, this terrific Chassagne is irresistible now and even better with age.

"Textbook Chassagne, with oats, lemon, a touch of creaminess, plus freshness to bring it all together" Angus McLean
