Domaine Montirius Le Village Organic 2019

Vacqueyras AOC

A luscious Rhône red from a 5-Star family domaine. It’s biodynamic too, which shows how much care they invest. From Vacqueyras, an appellation that makes “excellent stunt doubles” (WSJ) for Châteauneuf-du-Pape, it’s smoky, herbal and blackberry ripe.

The cru village of Vacqueyras lies close to Châteauneuf-du-Pape and produces sensational wines at a more affordable price. This is the superb Le Village from Domaine Montirius, a highly acclaimed, fifth-generation estate run by Christine and Eric Saurel. They make a tiny bit of white and rosé, but most is silky, seductive and red. The 2019 is crafted from low-yield Grenache, with a little Syrah, all from mature vines, the age of which adds to intensity. They follow biodynamic principles (even more rigorous than organic) to ensure absolute purity of fruit and flavour of where its from. Aged for a year, with no oak, this is a very appealing red – ripe, smoky, herbal fruit and silky tannins. Spot on served with grilled lamb or aubergine bake.

"Rich Rhône red from a superb vintage and an outstanding family domaine, biodynamics and all!" Jennie Perry
