Italy’s ancient tradition of sun drying grapes before fermentation gives Amarone della Valpolicella wines an irresistible richness. A glorious combination of power and complexity, these superb reds are prized the world over and continue to develop with age. They are not everyday wines – making them is a time consuming labour of love and that’s reflected in the price. But not in this case. If we could name the prestigious cellar – the first to produce modern Amarone in the 1850s – the price would nearly double. It’s aged for 24 months in a combination of large Slovenian barrels and small French barriques to add a spicy vanilla edge to the powerfully dark, rich fruit. Serve with game, grilled or braised meats or risotto all’Amarone.
