Barón de Barbón wines always stand out for their quality and value, as you’ll know if you’re a fan of their standard Rioja. The family cellar was founded in 1926 by José Murúa Villaverde, the latest in a long line of winemakers, but when he retired the winery was sold. In 1982 one of his sons – Julián Murúa Entrena – repurchased the bodega, determined to revive the family tradition. Now Julián’s talented son, Javier, has joined him. Their vineyards lie in the premium Alavesa, where the grapes for this fine Reserva were all hand picked to preserve quality. The wine was aged for two years in both French and American oak barrels to lend a lavish layer of spicy complexity. It’ll show at its best with grilled red meats, game or pasta dishes.
