Here's a mineral-fresh white of real class from the enthusiastic and always passionate Michel Chapoutier, one of the Rhône's most famous characters. Since he took control of this long-established firm in 1988, quality has soared. Chapoutier now produces the most diverse and complex wines to be found in the valley. Particularly well-known for their remarkable Hermitage releases, they also produce an array of great wines from across the area. Saint-Péray is a small appellation just south of Cornas, renowned for Marsanne, which brings fresh peach and honeysuckle notes. Half of the grapes are grown on chalk for freshness, half on granite for minerality, and all lees-aged with regular batonnage (stirring) for roundness. Great with creamy gratin.
