The Avril family have been making wines in Châteauneuf du Pape since the start of the 18th century and their Clos des Papes, founded in 1896, is a benchmark for the appellation. The estate is spread across 24 plots encompassing rocky soils, sand, limestone and gravel, with each contributing to the wine’s renowned complexity. It is only released if the vintage is deemed good enough. Fermented in stainless steel, then aged in large wooden foudres for up to 15 months, and bottled without filtration for maximum body, this wine is all about fruit. Clos des Papes is known for its ageing potential and while the highly regarded 2019 has plenty of that, it’s also approachable now. Decant early and serve with hearty casseroles, roast meats or game.

"Wow, really expressive nose. Drinking beautifully now but will improve with time" Critic, Jancis Robinson
