Chateau Lanessan Haut Medoc 2017

Haut-Medoc AOC

Spring frosts meant that Bordeaux’s 2017 vintage got off to a slow start. But the vines that escaped, produced lovely quality and wines of "overall balance and charm" (Jeb Dunnock). A lively claret with an intense core of dark cassis and tobacco.

The Haut-Médoc is one of Bordeaux’s most well-known appellations, famous for its sturdy Cabernet-rich clarets. With a history going back to the early 14th century, Château Lanessan has roots that are more established than many of the well-known names in the nearby Médoc village of Saint-Julien (including 2éme Cru Classé Château Gruaud Larose). The Delbos family acquired the property in 1793 and passed it on to their descendents, the Boutiller family. They are still the custodians of the estate and its 40 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot vines. Their 2017 is a very solid and well-made claret given extra layers of richness and smoothness by lengthy maturation in oak barrels (a high proportion of which were new).

"Vibrant Haut-Medoc with plenty of acidity, fine tannins and a fresh finish. Shows good backbone" James Suckling
