Château Puy-Blanquet is a fine example of the quality that can be found in from 2017. Its wines tend not to be as powerful as those from 2015 or 2016, the fruit a little fresher thanks to a cooler spell in August, and the alcohol levels are a little lower too. Instead, as Lisa Perrotti-Brown of RobertParker.com explains, this vintage is all about “finesse, perfume and aromatic intensity as opposed to weighty richness”. With ripe and perfumed fruit, it’s altogether a more traditional Bordeaux vintage. And, as a result, there are 2017 gems to be found that don’t cost the earth. With its fresh fruit flavour balanced beautifully with and sweet tannins and a hint of coffee and oak, this red is one such smooth Grand Cru gem. Drink now or cellar.
