In Riverina, a small patch of SE Australia, something akin to magic happens when you blend rich, spicy Shiraz and smooth, dark Durif. This one is the creation of Bill Calabria and his three sons – it’s packed with ripe forest fruit and mocha spice.

Riverina is the ‘Little Italy’ of the outback. In the mid 20th century hundreds of Italian farmers moved there, bringing their families, their love of the land, and in some cases their precious vines. One such family was the Calabrias, who, in 1945, purchased a few acres of land to cultivate. They kept aside a small plot to grow vines, so they could all enjoy wines at meal times. As their farm grew, so did their vineyard, and friends and neighbours began buying Calabria wines. So the estate has developed and with it success and recognition. Today, Bill’s sons Frank, Michael and Andrew, and daughter Elizabeth, are part of the family business, contributing to the creation of this luscious Shiraz Durif. A great red with beef or grilled lamb.
