Marqués de Valdecañas Gran Reserva 2010

Cariñena DO

Decanter wrote "Carineña is home to some of the best value reds in Spain, if not the world." That's why our Buyer keeps going back for more. This superb Gran Reserva is a perfectly mature, berry scented red, long aged in barrel for toasty spice.

Valdecañas is named after a noble family descended from the 11th century King of León Ferdinand I. How apt for a wine of such regal style. It’s one of the flagship releases of a cellar we’ve been buying from for decades, hence our privileged access to the finest barrel aged wines. Old-vine Tempranillo and Garnacha give strawberry and black pepper character, while Cabernet adds elegance and complexity. Oak ageing and time create the gorgeous oaky mellowness that pervades every mouthful. A patiently crafted wine like this needs a little time to unfurl fully, so decant it an hour ahead, taking care to leave behind any sediment (a good sign – of a natural, richly flavoured wine). Enjoy with a smoky chicken casserole or roast chicken or lamb.
