What a reward for going off the beaten track!

Bajoz 2017 is the first vintage seen in the UK of winemaker Félix Solis Junior’s labour of love. Named for the river that runs past the vines, giving them much-needed water.

Such is the quality of Toro red that huge estates in Rioja and Ribera del Duero are buying up land ... and asking eye-watering fees. (One of them, Teso La Monja, is Spain’s most expensive wine at over £700.)

But Félix is determined to stay grounded. “Toro doesn’t do marketing like Rioja,” he insists. “We don’t spend lots of money making noise. It’s all about the wine.” That makes his richly barrel-aged Bajoz a classic bargain. Tony Laithwaite’s had a taste ... just look at his note!

“Imagine the silky-smoothness of Rioja, charged with extra rich, dark red fruits. A lick of vanilla oak rounds out the sort of big, gutsy red that I absolutely adore. I’m certain you’ll love it too.”

Félix, Maria and their growers are thrilled with their creation. At £7.99 a bottle, make sure you’re among the first to taste it.
